Courses

The master’s programme has a lot of freedom, also in the courses students take. For both Chemistry and LST, students have a choice of core courses from within a larger set of courses. The elective component can be filled with a broad range of courses, an extension of the research training projects or an extension of the specialisation-specific components.

The academic year is divided into four periods of equal length. Students should aim for 15 EC per period, which usually corresponds to 3 courses. A student should discuss their choices of courses with their mentor to make sure they create a package that is suitable for them and the major research project they intend to follow. Students who are unsure if a course is interesting for them are advised to go to the first lecture and decide later whether or not they will follow the course. Students who would like to discuss if their prior knowledge on a subject is adequate for a course can contact the lecturer directly.

Detailed information about specific courses can be found in the Prospectus of Chemistry and Life Science and Technology. The schedule for each course can be found at the Schedule section on this website.

Students have to register for every course and examination in MyStudyMap. More information about course and exam enrolment, including classnumbers, can be found on the university website. If you encounter difficulties or have questions about uSis, contact the Science Student Administration.

Core courses within the MSc Chemistry programme

> 2019-20 and earlier MSc Chemistry core courses

Students in the Chemistry programme choose four courses out of the courses listed here for their research area (Chemical Biology or Energy & Sustainability). The choices can be limited by their prior education and should be made in consultation with their mentor, to ensure appropriate courses are taken to prepare for their major research project.

Core courses within the MSc Life Science and Technology programme

> 2018-19 and earlier MSc Life Science and Technology core courses

As from the 2019-20 course year students in the LST programme have to choose four core courses from the three course series shown below: Biomedical, Molecular and Biophysical Sciences. At least one course from each series needs to be chosen. The choices can be limited by their prior education and should be made in consultation with their mentor, to ensure appropriate courses are taken to prepare for their major research project.

Academic development

For all students starting from september 2022 onwards.

All students in both the MSc Chemistry and LST programmes are required to acquire 6 EC in Academic Development courses. The course Academic Writing (2 EC) is obligatory. For the other 4 EC students can choose a course from a preset list, as shown below.

Electives

The elective component can be filled with a broad range of courses, an extension of the research training projects or an extension of the specialisation-specific components. The mentor may limit the choice in elective courses by the need to adapt the programme to the present knowledge of the student. This page details the options students have for their electives.
